The St.Mary’s Library Council advocates for students in St.Mary’s to read more books and be more creative. The club is led by the middle/high school librarian Ms.Odate and Ms.Conrad, Keito Fujita (’25), and Dominic Mitchell (’26) The library council has held many fundraisers as well as reading contests. Here are some of the amazing achievements that the library council has made:
Achievements
The library council held many fundraisers to raise money to send to charity. One of the biggest fundraisers that the library council had was the book sale held last year during back-to-school day and the carnival. The library council donated the money to the Asian Rural Institute and the St.Albans church. The Asian Rural Institute is an institution that teaches people from third-world countries about farming and other agricultural skills. St. Alban’s church supports immigrants in Japan, and the library council representatives visited the church last year. The library council sold a wide variety of books from elementary to parenting books, as well as boardgames and toys, all donated by generous people from the St. Marys community. The Library Council even managed to send a laptop and a box full of books to a school in Zambia.
Events
Last year, the library council held a writing competition, where middle and high school students submitted their essays and stories to the library, with an Amazon gift card for first prize. The library council also visited the British School in Tokyo last year for the annual library council conference, where students from different schools discussed their recommended books, and nominated books for the Sakura Medal reading for this year.
The Library Council advocates reading and creative thinking to everyone around the world. Through fundraisers and events, the Library council is steadily reaching this Goal.
