St. Mary’s built on its strong 2nd-place finish in the invitational tournament at the Taipei American International School last Friday by defeating Christian Academy in Japan(CAJ). The night was filled with excitement as the crowd was filled with energy, hoping for a strong show for both the JV and Varsity teams.
The JV team battled hard but couldn’t break through CAJ’s solid defense, ultimately falling 2-0. Despite several strong attempts at points, a couple of mistakes in the second set cost them the game. Though disappointed, the JV players showed determination, learning lessons for future games.
The Varsity match, however, delivered a thrilling comeback. After winning the first set 1-0, CAJ equalized and then took the lead 2-1, Although St. Mary’s were trailing they came back setting the stage for an anxious finish. In the second and third sets, St. Mary’s were looking low-spirited. Still, they were raised by the crowd’s atmosphere as St. Mary’s team fired in a long-range serve to secure a 3-2 victory, sending the home crowd into a celebration and sending CAJ home disappointed.
With this victory, the Varsity team continues to build momentum for what promises to be an exciting season ahead. Fresh off their impressive 2nd-place finish at the Taipei American International School Invitational, the team is high on confidence. Each game is shaping them to be a better team altogether.
