Last week, a unique opportunity presented itself when a California-based math company, MidSchoolMath, approached St. Mary’s with an invitation to participate in an unusual project. The company produces engaging math curriculum that showcases students in different locations around the world applying math in many real-world environments. Three middle school students from St. Mary’s were selected, Matti (’29), Eddie (’29), and Shoma (’29), and given math problems to solve in different settings.
Filming occurred in Tokyo, where the students, accompanied by middle school teacher Karl Twohig, enjoyed an unforgettable week filled with adventure and a chance to engage with complex mathematics. The chaperone ensured the event ran smoothly, arrived punctually, and organized everything for the large-scale occasion.
On Day 1, the event began exceptionally early when the students headed to Mt. Fuji. They then traveled to Lake Yamanakako and climbed Mount Miyojin, where they asked local experts about the environment.
On Day 2 the students visited a film studio, where they solved math problems on a glass board. In the afternoon, they visited Hamarirkyu Garden, an Edo-era temple and garden on Tokyo Bay.
On Day 3, the students visited a robot café where they met the CEO and discussed the intersection of technology and math.
On Day 4, they returned to the film studio for more filming before heading to the famous Shibuya scramble crossing. Here, they analyzed the math behind the crowd dynamics and discussed the busiest times at the crossing.
On Day 5, the group visited the Tokyo Tower, adding a layer more excitement and scenery to the segment .
On Day 6, the students completed their segments.
Filming the segments was a great experience and adventure for the boys from St. Mary’s. It was not just about solving math problems. Along the way, the students had the chance to witness firsthand how filming is done, with all the hard work, patience, and behind-the-scenes effort that goes into creating something unique. It was a week filled with learning, exploration, and growth, leaving everyone with memories and insights that will last a lifetime.
