Have you ever wondered what it feels like to live in multiple different countries and cultures? Ireneus Hieromini (’27) a sophomore from the East African country Tanzania, shared some of the amazing information about his home country Tanzania.
About Tanzania
Tanzania is a country located in East Africa. The official languages are Swahili and English. Tanzania is home to amazing national parks like the Serengeti National Park, which is known for its great migration of wild animals and is home to many lions, rhinos, elephants, and more! Tanzania is also home to Africa’s tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro.

Ireneus Hieromini(’27)Joined this school back in 2022, said that he enjoys living in Japan. Before coming to Japan, he lived in his home country of Tanzania for 7 years, then lived in Ethiopia for 5 years. When asked about the people in Tanzania, he said, “They’re very sociable, they’re welcoming”. The overall atmosphere in Tanzania is very welcoming and warm. He also enjoys the warm climate in Tanzania as well! Tanzania has several unique national holidays that are significant to its culture and history. Saba Saba( means July 7th) is an international trade day, that celebrates the foundation of the Tanganyika African National Union, which was founded back in 1954. Another important day for the Tanzanian people is Nane Nane (August 8th) where people give recognition to all of the farmers in Tanzania, hosting a big farmers market. Speaking of food, the national dish of Tanzanian food is Ugali, a porridge consisting of maize flour and served with stews, meat, and vegetables. This dish symbolizes communal dining, which is when everyone gathers and enjoys their meal together to foster socialization and strengthen bonds. When asked about what he likes about living in Japan, Ireneus said that it’s “really easy to do something fun!” Irenues also likes how everything is advanced in Japan (transportation, infrastructure, convenience). Ireneus enjoys both cultures, Tanzanian and Japanese!
Overall, Tanzania is a great country, filled with breathtaking nature and welcoming people, as well as a vibrant, unique culture. Special thanks to Irenues Hieromini for sharing insights into his country!
