“Do you know any famous women in history?” “What did they do?” These are some of the topics that the high schoolers discussed during advisory class. On Thursday, March 6th, High school girls from the International School of Sacred Heart (ISSH) and St.Dominics visited St.Mary’s International School for International Women’s Day. An interview was conducted with the advisory coordinator and high school counselor, Mr Dan Brown.
About International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8th.(March 6th for this school since the 8th is a Saturday) It’s a day to commemorate and celebrate women who made scientific, economic, cultural, and other contributions to the world. This day also encourages everyone to pursue their freedom and not be restricted by gender expectations and addresses the problems like wage gap, female stereotypes, and expectations that females are expected(sometimes forced) to follow.
On Thursday, 4 girls from ISSH (G10,11,12) and 17 girls from St.Dominic’s International School (twelve 10th graders and five 11th graders) Visited St.Mary’s for the event. “It’s especially important for an all-boys international school to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) because it helps foster respect, awareness, and advocacy for gender equality among the boys in our school,” Mr.Brown said. He also emphasized the importance for boys in St.Mary’s to have opportunities to talk with girls from other schools so that students can learn and gain appreciation from each other, and help support and celebrate one another. Mr.Brown also wanted to appreciate and give special thanks to those who made this event possible. “Thanks to the administrators at both ISSH and St. Dominic’s, along with Mrs. Fradale for helping make their visit possible. Thanks to Mr.Gardonio for organizing Student Council support, and Mr. Chan for helping with the social afterward.” He also wanted to thank all the advisors in this school, since they are the ones conducting the lessons and supporting the students. As the advisory coordinator, Mr.Brown is also going to be gathering feedback and opinions on the event through a survey at the end of the year. Overall, this event was an insightful and important opportunity for both students at St.Mary’s and the guests from ISSH and St.Dominics to get to know each other and discuss important topics.
