Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Ms. Kim organizes private math tutoring sessions for high schoolers to teach 7th graders.
Ms. Kim launched this event approximately 8 years ago for students who wanted to learn math properly and build a strong foundation in math. The system was designed to benefit both groups—Tutors could learn how to interact and come up with different solutions to make the students understand the concept of math, while the students could improve their math skills with personal guidance.
According to Ms. Kim, good tutors are patient and try to understand their students. When students struggle to solve math problems, it is their duty to help them out step by step. She stated that it is more about personality and willingness to commit to helping weaker students in math. Some students even choose their high school tutors based on their learning styles.
Ms. Kim put a lot of dedication into organizing the sessions. She always schedules the meetings between the students and tutors, ensures that people get to the tutoring session on time, and prints out all the worksheets and answer sheets for both the students and teachers. Her efforts made the program successful.
Over the years, Ms. Kim has made significant progress. She saw multiple students who used to receive 1s in maths getting 2s or 3s. She stated, “Students are enjoying math,” emphasizing the joy the students are experiencing from the tutoring session. While the tutors are compensated through a small fee, their biggest reward comes from receiving deep appreciation from students and teachers.
