The St. Mary’s Middle School Art Club and RP students recently collaborated on an art project that is now on display in the school atrium. Ms. Chaun, the RP art teacher, and Ms. Ramos-Virley guided the project, encouraging the students from different grade groups to work together to create creative and unique interpretations of art pieces.

For the first phase of the art project, the RP students focused on the original design of the monster’s character as part of their classwork. Each RP student was tasked with creating a descriptive video that describes their creation of the monsters, including the monster’s personality, appearance, and story behind it. Then, the videos were shared with the Middle School Art Club.

The Middle School Art Club students then used the RP students’ original work as inspiration to add their own touches. They then added their own interpretations of the monsters from the video that the RP students provided. This allowed them to build ideas and further enhance the RP students’ ideas while showcasing their artistic skills in the monster art pieces.
The finished monsters are now on display in the atrium. Each includes a set of the original RP students’ designs alongside the Middle School students’ reincarnated versions of their monsters. The results seem to put viewers inside the minds of these students, and skills such as creativity, collaboration, and communication can be seen even with an age group difference.
According to Ms. Chaun, the activity helped students think critically and creatively about character design. Ms. Ramos-Virley encouraged the students to create insightful themes to this project, which was a valuable opportunity for younger students to practice interpretation while respecting another student’s vision. The monster display will remain in the atrium for a limited time.
Students and staff of the St. Mary’s community are encouraged to stop by and view the collaborative work before it is taken down.
