St.Marys will be hosting a block party to celebrate our beloved headmaster, Mr.Kagei’s retirement. All are welcome, and the event will be filled with with fun games, food, music, and more! Special thanks to Ms.Stevens, the marketing coordinator for providing additional information.
What is a block party?

Block Parties have a long history that includes a long evolution from village festicvals in pre-industrial times, to urban celebrations in the modern era. Many historians place the
origins of the modern block party in the early 20th century in New York City. In a city with limited park space, roads were closed off, and it was a day where everyone who lived “on the block” came and enjoyed food, music, and games. It became a cultural landscape in New York for immigrant communities, and it is also said to be the origin of American Hip-Hop culture.
The significance of the event
The main theme of the block party this year is to celebrate Mr.Kagei and praise him as the GOAT (Greatest of All Titans!). Not only is Mr.Kagei the headmaster, but he was a student, a wrestling team member, a stuco president, an alumnus of the class of ’78, a teacher, and a coach. While the international gala at the Tokyo American Club celebrated his retirement, this event was limited to faculty and staff. The block party is open to anyone, giving all the opportunity to thank Mr.Kagei for his 13 years of service and dedication for over 40 years to St.Mary’s. Also, stay tuned for the amazing musical performances by The Blue Brothers (high school jazz band), the high school choir, and a professional blues band performed by members of the class of ’73.
About the event
The block party will take place on Sunday, June 1st, from noon, rain or shine. A variety of food such as Yakisoba, Kebab sandwiches, Falafels, Tacos, French fries, iced coffees, Bubble tea, Ice cream, beer, and lemon sours will be available on the day. Additionally, soft drinks and snacks are all free! People will also have the opportunity to play basketball on the court, slip and slide (prepared to get wet!), and play field games, all for free! While the carnival is a fundraiser, made possible by volunteers and faculty, this event is an opportunity for everyone to relax and have a good time. Ms.Stevens, the marketing coordinator “Everyone should come and thank him for his contributions and give him a final fist bump!”
