On April 24th, Art students in St. Mary’s went on a day trip to two art museums. The first exhibition was “The National Museum of Western Art” in Ueno, which has a varied collection of historical art, ranging from the Renaissance to Cubism. The second exhibition, held at the “Mori Art Museum” in Roppongi, showcased futuristic arts such as digital animation, grabbing the attention of Digital Art Students.

The first and second exhibitions had very contrasting themes, empowering students to explore diverse aspects of art. In the first exhibition, most Renaissance artworks were old and biblical in theme. Students were interested in observing the color combinations and techniques the artists used in the 1400s and 1500s. They were fascinated to see that the artworks were so well preserved and the way artists interestingly drew the human figures creatively, not necessarily realistically. The second exhibition was technology-themed, and many artworks involved digitally animated videos. Yet, the themes within the field of technology varied; some were about AI, while others explored the meaning of humans in the digital world, interactive games, or the advancement of technology.

According to Ms. Steel, a high school art teacher, students familiarized themselves with ways to depict human figures through the observation of professionals’ artworks in real life. She plans to take the students to different exhibitions next year, hoping to visit the Modern Art period and Asian artists’ exhibitions, which could further provide an understanding of diverse kinds of art.
