This year the 8th grade English students are stepping into thw world of journalism, producing investigative articles through a unit led by Mr. Kim. Their work grounded in original research and real interviews is being published for the first time in a new section of The Diplomat.
Unlike typical writing this project pushes students to report on relevant, real-world topics within the school community. Using MISO methods (Media, Interview, Survey, and Observation) students are required to gain original sources and avoid depending on pre-published material. The focus is to tell compelling stories that reveal larger issues or ideas.“Students are expected to move beyond surface-level topics and analyze what’s really going on,” said Mr. Kim. “They’re encouraged to look closely at everyday life and find the deeper story beneath it.” Interviews include voices from across campus administrators, staff, teachers, and students giving articles a wide range of perspectives.

For the first time, their work is being given an official place in The Diplomat recognizing the quality of their work. Mr. Kim, who hasmade journalism a core part of his English curriculum says “Student voices presented in a formal platform like this is very powerful,” Mr.Kim said. “It really demonstrates the quality of our students both in character and writing ability.
