On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected pope in Vatican City, becoming the 267th pontiff and the first American-born Holy Father. The election followed the death of Pope Francis and took place during a two-day conclave attended by 133 cardinals. He chose the name Leo XIV and appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica at 7:19 p.m.
“Peace be with all of you,” Pope Leo XIV said in his first blessing. White smoke from the Sistine Chapel signaled the announcement to over 70,000 people in the square. This is a time of unity, renewal, and deep listening to the Spirit of God,” he added.
Father Danilo, school priest at St. Mary’s, responded: “My initial reaction was one of gratitude. It’s a sacred moment in the life of the Church.” He added, “Even as a small Catholic community, we are part of the Universal Church.”
The pope’s name, Leo, symbolizes leadership and courage. “Like the lion he is named after, may he lead with boldness and a heart on fire for the Gospel,” said Father Danilo.
Pope Leo XIV is expected to focus on service to the poor, global unity, and interfaith peace.
