The Grade 10 retreat to Yamanashi was full of adventure, learning, and a few surprises along the way. Students and teachers left St. Mary’s on September 3rd and returned earlier than planned on September 5th due to heavy rain and an approaching typhoon.
Despite the weather, most of the trip went smoothly. On the first day, students tackled the Forest Adventure ropes course, where they tested their courage and teamwork high up in the trees. That night, the Student Council hosted a team-building event with a lively game of musical chairs. Bus 1’s winner was Reyon, while Bus 2’s champion was Wujin. The final round included both winners and the teachers, ending with Ms. Medley taking the crown. She celebrated her victory by throwing up “W” signs, making the whole room laugh.
The second day brought even more excitement, with groups splitting into canoeing and mountain biking sessions around the lakeside. Lunch featured hearty bowls of hot udon, a local speciality that warmed everyone up after the active morning. That evening, Student Council led a round of Red Light, Green Light, which got everyone moving, laughing, and cheering for their classmates.
The final day was supposed to include a sightseeing boat ride, a ropeway trip, and a visit to Oshino Village. However, the typhoon forced the schedule to change. Instead, the group stopped by the Fujisan World Heritage Center to learn about Mt. Fuji before heading home. Students enjoyed lunch at a rest stop before arriving safely back at school around 2 p.m.
Even with some activities canceled, the retreat was considered a success. Students experienced new challenges, worked together, and made lasting memories. As the trip leaders put it, “We are so glad to have had this valuable time with your students.”
