Location: Kegon Falls (Nikko, Tochigi)
Last week, the grade 11 students embarked on an exciting trip to Nikko, Tochigi prefecture, from September 3rd to September 5th. Retreats are more than just fun; they’re an important opportunity for students to foster new friendships and make everlasting memories.
On day one, students gathered at St. Mary’s at 7:45 AM and boarded the bus to Nikko. On the way to Nikko, the bus made a stop at Hanyu Parking Area, where many students bought snacks and drinks for the trip. The students arrived at Nikko Daiyagawa Park at around 11:30, where they enjoyed a picnic lunch out in the green and had fun activities like soccer and catch. After the fun picnic at the park, the students went to Kegon Falls, one of the famous waterfalls in Japan. The students were astonished by the power of the water and the view of the cliff, and took a group photo. After the waterfall, the students spent around two hours walking/hiking around Lake Chuzenji, a lake known for its clear waters and water sports, and enjoyed the cool breeze of nature. Once the jike was over, the students headed to the Hotel, where they had free time, a delicious dinner, and a relaxing onsen bath. They also enjoyed trivia in the evening, organized by the student council. Everyone went to bed by ten to prepare for the upcoming long day.
On day two, the students split into two groups. One group went rafting first and canoeing in the afternoon a vice versa. Students went rafting down the Kinugawa River and enjoyed the fast currents and the occasional splash they received from the currents. “I enjoyed the rafting experience, since I got to spend time with my friends, and the instructor was really funny,” said fellow grade 11 student, Kento Nakajima. Canoeing was also a main highlight for all students, as it was a new experience for many, and many enjoyed playing “bumper carts” with their canoes, where they would bump into each other. After a long day, the students returned to the hotel and enjoyed relaxing in the onsen, as well as playing Bingo, where they won free snacks. Exhausted by the fun day, the students went to bed, preparing for an awesome final day.
On the final day, the third day, the students visited the Nikko Natural Science Museum. Students learned about the history, environment, and biodiversity of Nikko. The juniors also had a chance to touch and feel real deer antlers and fur. After the museum visit, the students enjoyed their last lunch by Lake Chuzenji, had some time to buy souvenirs, and headed onto the bus to school.
The three-day retreat not only gave students a chance to explore the beauty of Nikko but also strengthened bonds and made everlasting memories. This was an experience that grade 11 students will cherish for years.
