On September 19th, the elementary school will have the honor of welcoming award-winning author Holly Thompson and award-winning illustrator Toshiki Nakamura.
The day will start with a presentation for the entire elementary school, followed by workshops for students in grades 4 and 5.
Elementary librarian Ms. Tammy Hays explained that she is “hoping that the boys learn the joys of writing books.”
This won’t be Thompson’s first time at the school; she has visited on several occasions, including a virtual Q&A during COVID and an earlier workshop with today’s sophomores when they were in elementary school, about her book The Wakame Gatherers.
For students interested in art and illustration, the visit also offers an opportunity to learn from Nakamura, a highly respected artist whose clients include Warner Bros., Netflix, and DreamWorks Animation.
Together, Thompson and Nakamura will share insights from their new book, Listening to Trees: George Nakashima, Woodworker, a Sakura Medal book this year, which celebrates the life and work of visionary Japanese American woodworker George Nakashima.
