At St. Mary’s, teachers and faculties cannot further emphasize the importance of wearing helmets both on and off campus. With many children biking to school, concerns about safety have risen. School officials note that helmets are a simple, but powerful way to prevent serious injuries, such as concussions.
In an interview, Mr. Kramer said “That incident, if I was not wearing a helmet, I would not be talking to you right now.” Mr. Kramer was hit by a car from behind, which resulted in a fractured collar bone, and a severe concussion. He emphasized that helmets may be inconvenient, however safety is more important.
The St Mary’s community wants every child to arrive safe and ready to learn, stressing that helmet use should be as routine as putting on a seatbelt. St Mary’s plans to include reminders on the HS bulletin as a daily reminder of wearing a helmet. Together, St Mary’s hopes to a build a culture where safety comes first, and that every student understand the importance of helmets.
