This year, St. Mary’s is honoring its former Head of School, Mr. Saburo Kagei, by naming the campus bridge after him. Mr. Kagei, who stepped down last school year, was not only Head of School, but also an alumnus and teacher, making him a true part of the school’s story.
Mr. Kagei gave decades of his life to the community. “Mr. Kagei gave so much of himself to the school as student, teacher, and leader,” said High School Principal Mr.Bayfield. “It seemed a fair gesture for the school to dedicate part of the building to him. Schools must mark important figures in their histories.”
The bridge was chosen for a special reason. Mr. Kagei worked hard to make it happen, spending time with both the school and the local ward to get it approved. He once explained that the bridge is not technically allowed to “touch” either side of the school, so it connects only in small parts as a free-standing structure. Even so, he insured that it was safe, and made with the best Japanese craftsmanship.
Beyond his projects, people remember Mr. Kagei for who he was—warm, approachable, and always committed to the school. “Mr. Kagei’s warmth, approachability, and commitment were unquestionable,” said Mr. Bayfield.
For students today, the bridge is more than just a means of crossing campus. It shows how much Mr. Kagei cared for the school and reminds us that one person’s effort can leave something lasting behind.
