After school started, several high school students headed to the library instead of going out to the field. Thanks to the new policy in St. Mary’s, which expanded options during lunch recess. In addition to keeping the option of burning energy in the field, the school has expanded the range of options, such as spending time in the library or attending club meetings. The new policy provides a better environment to study for students who want to work instead of doing outdoor activities.
The new policy also has rules to keep. On Mondays and Fridays, all students are still required to go outside and do outdoor activities. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the days when the students are free to choose between indoor and outdoor activities. Thursdays are advisory days, so usually, students are required to stay indoors.
The indoor activities include visiting the library, meeting specific teachers, and doing club activities. Dan Kim, a 9th-grade student who recently built the Bible club, had an introductory meeting of his newly established club during the September 17 Lunch recess in Room 322. “I think this is a great policy. Some students can study, especially for exams.” Dan said. He added that since the importance of exams has increased, the policy will help a lot of students prepare.
Whether students choose the field, the library, or their clubs, the new policy has already changed how lunch recess feels for high school students. The next few months will show if it becomes a lasting tradition of the school.
