Sora is a tool from Open AI for creating AI generated photos and videos. A brand new version released to the public last week and has already faced high amounts of scrutiny for what it has been used for and what it could be used for.
Sora’s AI is based on Open Ai’s Dall-E 3 image generator and can generate fairly convincing videos. Most people can still tell that the videos are AI but some have definitely been tricked already. The tool is only going to get more advanced and harder to discern from real videos. This has raised concern as the tool could be used to influence people’s opinions or get people to believe false information. The restrictions for creating content are quite loose and this could be an issue for copyrighted content. Open AI released a statement saying that companies could opt out to prevent copyrighted property from being generated with the AI but many are upset at this. Copyright typically doesn’t require this much action from the holder to be upheld and this opt-out system is quite unusual. Copyrighted material is also used to train these AI engines. People doing creative work have also shown opposition towards this kind of AI as it may devalue their work and plagiarise content.
