This week, heartfelt news spread among St. Mary’s faculty and students regarding a grade 12 student, Jimin K., who sustained a mild concussion and a few moderate injuries after getting hit by a car on his way to school.
On September 18th, at about 8:15, he was biking on the way to school when he encountered a dangerous section of the steep road. After cycling with a friend, they descended down the hill and saw an incoming car from an intersection. However, the car had gave way for his friend to pass; but due to visibility issues and the incline of the road from the driver, the car collided with Jimin’s bike. He tried to slow down but he couldn’t come to a full stop in which resulted in a full collision with the bike. Subsequently, he was thrown from his bike and hit his head on a wall.
“I told her that I was fine, mainly because it really didn’t hurt at the moment,” Jimin said
The driver did come out of the car to help the student however provided no contact information, suspected that he was fine, and decided to drive off.
He had to carry his “now-unrideable-bike” up a hill to school. After telling the school administration, he was quickly sent for medical attention. Fortunately, after multiple MRI scans from doctors, he had only sustained mild injuries.
Long after the incident had occurred, he urges everyone to wear a helmet and also to slow down when biking downhill. “It may feel uncomfortable, but it could save your life,” he emphasizes. “If I didn’t wear a helmet, who would’ve known what would happened to me”
So remember, safety always comes first. Always wear your helmet, and look at your surroundings. Let’s keep St. Mary’s International School safe.
