Last month, on September 25th, the 3rd-grade Students in Mr. Wilson’s, Mr.Mikawa’s, and Mr. Bernard’s classes took a field trip as part of their Social Studies unit, “Leaders and Responsibilities” to the national parliament building. The unit introduces the students to the different types of governments in the world, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens in Japan’s system. This trip allowed the students to explore the workings of government first-hand.
Unfortunately, the students could not visit the National Diet while it was in session, as only students aged ten and up were allowed during that time. Since they were below that age, they had to visit when the chambers were empty, which was a bit disappointing for some of them. Still, there was much to experience during the tour.
The most exciting part of the visit, according to the teachers, was the chamber of the House of Councillors. This section had an English audio guide, making it easier for the students to understand. More importantly, it is the room they often see on television when government actions are shown, and being there in person, where the emperor usually sits, left a lasting experience on the group.
Even without seeing a live session, the trip was memorable for the students. It deepened their understanding of the Japanese government and connected them to their lessons on leadership and responsibility.
