Following the varsity tennis’s victory in Kanto plains, St. Mary’s Junior Varsity tennis team has also taken all victories in the Kanto Plains competition. Singles was won by Aoto Fukai(10) and doubles was won by SJ Lee(10) and Yunho Lee(10). The lineup of St. Mary’s was as follows. In singles: Aoto Fukai, Kent Stein(10), and Max Long(10). In doubles: SJ Lee(10) and Yunho Lee(10), and Ken Yamamoto(9) and Jinmok Lee(9).
The singles game started off great, with all single players advancing to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately Max Long suffered a loss from ASIJ singles 2, 6-0. However, Aoto Fukai avenged by coming victorious 6-1 against ASIJ singles 2. Following Aoto’s great game, Kent Stein exhibited incredible perseverance, changing the game from 4-1 to 7-5. His game against ASIJ singles 1 was a very close match, going to dues in tiebreaker, where Kent was victorious 9-7. The Kanto Finals was between St. Mary’s International School’s Aoto Fukai and Kent Stein. Kent grabbed the early lead, leading 4 games against 1. Nonetheless, Aoto’s consistency eventually won out, changing the game to 7-5 after a tiebreaker.
The doubles game, with SJ Lee and Yunho Lee as doubles 1 and Ken Yamamoto and Jinmok Lee as doubles 2, also started off great. Both doubles 1 and doubles 2 advanced to the quarterfinals, doubles 2 being victorious against CAJ doubles 1 6-0. Despite the early victory, St. Mary’s doubles 2 were deterred by ASIJ doubles 1 6-1. The opponents volleys proved to be a tough challenge for the two. For doubles 1, they had a tough game against ASIJ doubles 2, being dragged 3-0. Nevertheless, after focusing back in the game, they won 5 games straight, winning 6-4. The doubles Kanto Finals were between ASIJ doubles 1 and St. Mary’s doubles 1, SJ and Yunho. These two demonstrated excellent chemistry, suppressing the opponent 6-1.
St. Mary’s team took both victories in singles and in doubles for two years straight. With upcoming freshmen, next year’s Junior Varsity team looks stronger than ever.
