The Saint Mary’s History Society provides students with opportunities to engage in history-focused competitions like the International History Bee and Bowl (IHBB). These events allow students to demonstrate their knowledge across various historical periods, enhancing teamwork, critical thinking, and quick recall.
Recently, Saint Mary’s excelled in an IHBB regional tournament, with the Titans winning the Junior Varsity History Bowl championship and Jonathan Yang(’29) placing 2nd in the Middle School History Bee. Competitions include questions like, “Which empire fell with the capture of Constantinople in 1453?” (Answer: Byzantine Empire) and “What treaty ended World War I?” (Answer: Treaty of Versailles). These events push students to think quickly and recall detailed historical information.
Through participation, students develop not only their knowledge but also confidence, teamwork, and communication skills. the teams are coached by Mr. Pettit. The History Society’s activities, include mock quizzes and guest lectures, contribute to making it a vital part of Saint Mary’s extracurricular life. If you are interested in joining you can contact Mr. Pettit.
