This year, the learning commons will undergo exciting changes, led by Mr. Rose, the administration, the student council, and the design team. With the help of students, Mr.Rose aims to make the library a more welcoming space for everyone, where people can enjoy reading, relax, socialize, and study individually or in a group.
Although it has only been a few weeks since the start of the year, Mr.Rose has already started some initiatives to encourage reading during recess for middle school students. Many middle schoolers have signed up to come to the library for the second half of lunch (especially during hot days) to relax in a cool room and just enjoy reading. Mr.Rose emphasized the importance of students having time to read and relax, as they are in their classrooms all day. “It’s got so much potential”, Mr.Rose noted as he looked through the library. One thing he noted is the lack of space for reading. He noted that although there are no tables for studying, there isn’t a designated space for reading. His goal is to make a cozy space (adding bean bag couches, a table for reading ) for those who want to read and relax. Seeing the outdoor terrace, he also believes that there is so much potential for it to become an even better place. “It’s overlooking an alcove, making it a beautiful reading place.” Mr.Rose said. Another change is that there is now a notable professional book collection for teachers, located in the staff room. What was once a shelf for books to be discarded is now a shelf for teachers to enjoy reading and bring in new ideas to the classroom. The learning commons has become a vital place where both teachers and students can relax, read, and collaborate.
Beyond the learning commons itself, Mr.Rose has also brought changes to his middle school class known as media skills. This class fosters the skills needed for students of the modern age: critically analyzing online data and online/academic integrity (becoming a creative thinker and communicator). In the past, media skills were taught as a standalone course, but Mr.Rose would like to integrate the course into skills in other subjects as well. Mr.Rose has planned a research project including the factors stated above for the middle schoolers. The objective of the project is to evaluate a source relevant to another class and to think of the potential strengths and limitations of that source.

The learning commons is heading towards a new chapter to become a place where students can reflect on the value of harmony. Not only will this be a place for reading, but it will also be a place for students to collaborate, learn, and foster a sense of community.
