A teacher who wants the best for their students just finished his 1st year at St. Mary’s: Mr. Miller, the business management and history teacher. Originally from Nova Scotia on the east coast of Canada, Mr. Miller has a very diverse background in business management and history that he brings to the classroom.
Mr. Miller decided to teach at St. Mary’s School for several reasons, the most significant of which was its reputation as one of the best schools in Japan. The school’s IB program, especially, is very substantial, with an average of 35 scores out of 45.
“St. Mary’s is famous in this country for its excellence, and I wanted to be part of it,” Mr. Miller said. He wants to help shape every individual to success.
Mr. Miller balances his life at school while being a father and a husband outside of St. Mary’s. His free time activities shows his unique approach to teaching with the modern generation. He gets along quickly with his students at their level, whether gaming in Fortnite, reading books on history, or buying and reselling toys on the secondhand market. Mr. Miller says he loves things that students half his age do, which makes him easy to talk to. His unique ability to relate to kids interested in pop culture, video games, and comic books helps him establish relationships with other students. His dedication to relating to students is unreal,” I enjoy the same things they do,” he says.
Mr. Miller believes in pursuing what helps others while making yourself happy, a lesson that has helped shape his outlook on life. “If you can do both, you’re succeeding,” he claims. His time in Japan has also taught him about cultural differences. He recalls, humorously, how he once got into trouble for walking and drinking coffee simultaneously, called 食べ歩き(Eating while walking).
Aside from teaching at school, Mr. Miller’s favorite spot at home is on the sofa, where he often relaxes by playing Fortnite, one of his favorite video games. The staff room at St. Mary’s would be his go-to spot at the school. Here, other teachers have conversations with one another while relaxing with a snack. After teaching, he would love to spend as much time with his family as possible since family is precious.
Mr. Miller speaks highly of St. Mary’s and plans his class to be as exciting and memorable as possible. He enjoys working in a positive atmosphere where he can connect to students’ perspectives. He claims that if he could make one change, he would extend lunch breaks from 40 minutes to an hour. He wants to thank Ms. Fradale for this wonderful opportunity she has given to him.
