Residents of Tokyo who are 15 years old or older may soon be eligible to receive ¥11,000 (around $70) in digital points through the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s official “Tokyo app.” The program was created to help people manage rising living costs and has been expanded from an original plan of ¥7,000, adding an extra ¥4,000 in support.
To receive the points, users only need to download the 東京都公式アプリ app and verify their identity using a valid “My Number” card. Japanese citizenship is not required, meaning foreign residents living in Tokyo can also qualify as long as they have a My Number card and meet the age requirement. Once verified, users receive points that function like cash and can be used for everyday purchases.
Funding for the program will be included in a supplementary budget proposal expected to be approved by the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly in December. As prices for food, transportation, and daily necessities continue to rise, Tokyo’s digital points initiative offers timely financial relief and highlights how digital tools are being used to support residents.
