The Tokyo Christmas Market has become one of the city’s most popular winter traditions since it first launched in 2015. Inspired by the famous Christmas markets of Germany, especially the centuries-old Dresden Striezelmarkt, the event aims to bring authentic European holiday culture to Japan. Over the years, it has grown from a small seasonal fair into a major attraction that draws visitors from across the country. In 2025, the market will once again take place at both Meiji Jingu Gaien and Shiba Park from November 21 to December 25.

At both locations, students can enjoy traditional German food, warm drinks, handmade crafts, and detailed decorations. The Meiji Jingu Gaien venue features a fairy tale inspired layout with illuminations and a giant Christmas pyramid, while Shiba Park offers a more classic German style market right beside Tokyo Tower. Although the stalls can get crowded on weekends, the atmosphere is lively and offers a unique chance to explore European holiday traditions without leaving Tokyo.
For Saint Mary’s students, the market offers more than just seasonal fun. Since the event is supported by the German Embassy and German Tourism Association, it provides an authentic cultural experience for anyone interested in global customs, international food, or history. Whether you want to enjoy the lights with friends, try new foods, or learn more about the origins of European Christmas celebrations, the Tokyo Christmas Market 2025 is a perfect winter outing.
