As snow fell across Tokyo last week, many students wondered if we were headed for a snow day. With one student who did not wish to be identified even commenting that he “almost cried when I saw the melted snow on the road”

As a result, school remained open, but the decision involved careful planning behind the scenes.

According to Headmaster Dr. Davies, when weather may pose a safety risk, the school monitors multiple forecasts, checks road and public transportation updates, consults its transportation company, communicates with other schools such as Seisen, and follows government guidance.

A final decision is typically made and shared by 6:00 a.m. so families have enough notice. When possible, the school also communicates in advance about the possibility of closure.

This time, conditions did not ultimately require campus to close. Still, the close call highlighted how many moving parts factor into what might seem like a simple yes or no decision.
