Sophomore Kentaro has been named St. Mary’s Athlete of the Week after winning the 172 lb Far East Wrestling Championship in Camp Humphreys, South Korea, continuing the school’s championship tradition.
Coach Yabui described Kentaro’s performance throughout the season as “nothing but dominating.” Since a controversial loss on December 6 due to a scorekeeping error, Kentaro has responded with an undefeated streak, overwhelming every opponent.
His dominance was especially clear at the Far East Tournament, where he earned multiple victories by technical superiority and pin. Most of his opponents did not make it out of the first period. In the finals, Kentaro controlled the match against a wrestler from Humphreys, securing a decisive win to become the lone Far East champion from St. Mary’s this year.
Coach Yabui emphasized that Yamauchi’s victory was significant not only individually but historically, as it preserved St. Mary’s streak of producing at least one Far East champion every year since 2001.
