Recently, at St. Mary’s International School, there have been numerous reports from substitute teachers that students are misbehaving in classes when the main teacher is absent. Substitute teachers are reporting that students are misusing computers, leaving class without notification, or misbehaving with other students. Jihwan, a 15-year-old 8th-grade student, experienced students misbehaving and disrupting the class of a substitute teacher. Jihwan states that “I wanted to focus on my work, but it was noisy and disturbing, not letting me focus on my work that was due on the day.” He feeling frusturated leaving class since he had to finish his work at home, increasing the amount of work he has to do in his private time. This indicates that many more students, other than Jihwan, may have experienced these annoyances during class because of misbehaving students during substitute teacher classes.
Jihwan, currently a 8th grade student in St. Mary’s International school has always been an elite student with high levels of studying. He always sets a high-level goal to accomplish and works very hard both in school and at home. However, recently, he has been noticing many disrupting behaivors of students during substitute teachers’ classes. Jihwan says, “I always feel annoyed when students fool around during substitute teacher classes or even just in a normal teacher class because it disrupts my focus.” Not only Jihwan, but many other students also feel disrupted because of these behaviors. For example, Anonymous Student 1 states that “people always have a habit of acting rudely during substitute teacher classes, and I want them to fix it.” Disruption of a substitute teacher’s class has been a problem for a very long time in St’ Marys’s International School. To see the actual numbers of the disruption of classes, Grade 8 of St’ Mary’s did a grade-wide survey for multiple questions. While the St. Mary’s International School grade 8 survey may have been biased due to not being fully anonymous, some people still reported that they disrupt or act more rudely when a substitute teacher takes the place of a normal teacher. Over half of the grade, which was 51.4%, reported that people disrupting class make it harder for them to learn new material, and they are annoyed because of the disruptive behavior.
People always report on behavior-related things. Such as disrupting class or being annoying during substitute teacher classes. This issue should be fixed as soon as possible, as students like Jihwan and Annonymous Student 1 suffer from these behaviors, which result in lost study time.
