Freshman Steven Huang, though competing against older and larger competitors, delivered a surprise victory for St. Mary’s wrestling at the Varsity Dual Meet against ASIJ, showcasing the grit, discipline, and selflessness that define the program.
Coach Yabui did not hesitate to describe Huang as “the hardest worker in the room. Period.” His relentless work ethic, unmatched intensity, and constant commitment to improvement set him apart on the team. Though a man of few words, Huang’s dedication is evident through the sheer volume and consistency of his effort in practice.
In an uncommon but telling decision, Coach Yabui trusted Huang to bump up to the 121 lb weight class despite the size disadvantage, an opportunity typically avoided by coaches. That confidence was well placed. Rising to the challenge, Huang dominated a significantly heavier opponent, earning a decisive technical superiority victory.
By stepping up to fill an empty weight class, Huang played a crucial role as a team hero, helping St. Mary’s secure a commanding 52–9 victory over ASIJ. His performance was a clear demonstration that hard work pays off, and it exemplified the toughness, accountability, and team-first mentality that St. Mary’s wrestling stands for.
