On March 5, 2026, students from St. Mary’s International School attended the annual KPASS Math Field Day competition at the National Olympics Memorial Youth Center near Yoyogi Park in Tokyo.
More than 300 students from international schools across the Kanto region participated in the event. The day began with the individual contest, where students worked independently to solve as many challenging math problems as possible w
ithin a time limit of one hour. Following this, St Mary’s students achieved excellent results of Teruma Kawakubo (10) getting a score of 24/25 for second, and Wonwoo Choi (10) and Jamie Lee (1o) obtaining a score of 23/25 for third.
After the individual round, students collaborated in teams of 6 people for the tech challenge. The teams constructed a crane using only spaghetti sticks, designed to hold a ping-pong ball as high off the ground as possible. Students experimented with different designs, and learnt through trial and error while working together under the limited time of 45 minutes. Following the tech challenge, students had lunch throughout many places of the Memorial center, and did the energizer round, which involved students racing to collect problems and solve them together as a team.
St. Mary’s students achieved excellent results in the Energizer Round as well. Yunseong Oh (11) earned first place with his team, with the score of 85/90 points. Beyond the competition itself, Math Field Day provided students with an opportunity to meet peers and fellow friends from other international schools who share similar academic interests. Many participants left inspired by new problem solving approaches and motivated to continue developing their mathematical skills.
Congratulations to all participating mathematicians from St. Mary’s International School for representing the school.
