Students at St. Mary’s International School had a valuable opportunity to give back to the local community by participating in the Tokyo River Clean-Up. This volunteer event encouraged people of all ages to help protect Tokyo’s natural environment while also learning more about it.
During the event, participants gathered at a meeting point and were guided to rivers such as the Tamagawa, where they spent several hours collecting litter along the riverbanks. In addition to cleaning, organizers led a short eco-walk, giving students the chance to learn about local wildlife and ecosystems. This made the experience both educational and meaningful, especially for those interested in environmental science and sustainability.

For St. Mary’s students, this was a great way to put school values into action. By joining, students contributed to a cleaner environment, gained community service experience, and developed teamwork and leadership skills. It also gave them a chance to meet new people and experience a different side of Tokyo outside of the classroom.
After the clean-up, participants often stayed to socialize, whether through a picnic or a meal together, making it both a productive and enjoyable experience.
Overall, the Tokyo River Clean-Up was a simple yet impactful way for St. Mary’s students to make a difference while learning and connecting with the community.
