Many St. Mary’s students, ranging from young students to veterans, have spent time on the elementary school playground. However, this year, the playground will undergo a major expansion over the spring and summer. According to Mr. Kasai, the expansion is intended to “support the development of our younger students as well as to enhance the school’s profile.” This means that current or upcoming elementary students will begin next school year with a newly renovated playground.
The current playground was completed in 2009 as part of the first phase of campus reconstruction. After more than a decade of use, it is now being updated to better meet students’ needs today.

The construction is scheduled to begin on April 14. If everything goes according to plan, the project is expected to be completed around the start of the school year, on August 20. Some planting work may take place during fall break to avoid the intense summer heat in Tokyo. The expansion will connect the playground to the north building, where new playground equipment will be installed in the additional space. The picture below is a detailed plan of the construction.
After many years of serving students, the playground is finally being renewed. This upgrade will not only support younger students but also enhance the school’s overall environment. Overall, the new playground is expected to create a more enjoyable and engaging space, making school life even more fun for students.
