High school student Gregory (’26) has been nominated for St. Mary’s Artist of the Week after creating the sculpture, “Fractures”. His artwork of a screaming man was a result of immense dedication. According to Ms. Steel, the nominee remained positive despite various setbacks and challenges in the process of creating the sculpture, highlighting his positive mindset as a unique trait found in Gregory. The senior’s persistence and passion for the arts as a whole led him to create the sculpture, which aimed to be as expressive and absurd as possible, according to Gregory.
“… I drew inspiration for Michelangelo’s La Pieta, because La Pieta is super expressive and has many line, contour, and detail in the cloth that I wanted to emulate,” Gregory recounted. Indeed, the inspiration from Michelangelo’s iconic sculpture is readily apparent in Fractures, from the complicated folds and details in the shirt to the forehead lines on the face of the man.
Looking forward, Gregory also spoke of how he wants to make something much more subtle and sorrowful in the future in contrast to the loud, intense nature of Fractures. He mentioned how if he were to move forward with the concept, it would most likely be through the medium of a painting, which is much more illusive and abstract in it’s nature. Regardless, there is no doubt that whether it will be through a painting, sculpture, or tapestry, Gregory will deliver with the same amount of hard work, resilience, positivity, and passion as he would with anything else.
