In continuation of the St. Mary’s track and field season, the team has been putting in strong performances across various events. Joel Mbagwu (’29) qualified for the Far East competition after an impressive result in the long jump, where he reached 5.83 meters, surpassing the qualifying distance of 5.75 meters. Joel will be among the few freshmen taking part in the competition.
Joel secured his qualification at the CAJ Invitational meet held in Niiza. Competing against athletes from other schools, he delivered a strong overall performance. In addition to his long jump result, he also competed in the 100 meters, where he ran a time of 11.88 seconds in the finals, placing 10th overall at the meet.
Speaking about the competition, Joel said he did not place too many expectations on himself beforehand. “I actually didn’t know what to expect because I always like to keep my mind clear,” he said.
In order to compete successfully in track and field, athletes must prepare both physically and mentally. Training focuses on building strength, speed, and consistency across events.
The Far East competition will take place from April 26th to 28th in Hiroshima.
