For elementary students who are struggling to finish their assignments and keep up with the class, the HW Buddies club is the perfect opportunity for them, as it offers an extra boost in academic support. The club was originally founded by Elizabeth Hendrickson, the former learning support teacher. In this club, high school tutors assist younger students with their homework and learning, while also communicating and getting to know them, creating positive connections.
Ms. Brown, who is one of the club’s current supervisors along with Mr. Antal, emphasizes and explains that the main purpose of the club is to give these students extra time and guidance to complete their assignments. ” A little extra help can make a big difference,” she says while reflecting upon the journey of the students. The club not only gives the students academic help but also gives younger students the experience of connecting and learning with older students, creating a sense of mentorship and giving them a sense of what high school is like.
Many elementary students are challenged when it comes to organizatoin and focus for their homework. The Homework buddies is dedicated to looking at these issues and looks at these issues and addressing them by giving them support and by encouraging the responsibility to take care of their academics. Through the HW club, Ms Brown has seen great growth in the students, who have developed a greater sense of ownership over their work and have become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses. “Some of the tutors really connect with the students, and that support helps them build confidence,” she shares. By partnering the older students with the elementary students, relationships are made. In some cases, these relationships make the experience meaningful for both the tutors and the students they help
In the future, to help the students become even more of independent learners, the club will introduce more study skills and organization strategies. Whether seeking extra academic help or looking to mentor younger peers, the HW is an opportunity for growth and connection.
