The SMST Buccaneers started the exciting new season beginning with an inter squad time trial this past Saturday. This is followed by the first official meet on September 28th. The biggest event of the fall, the Buccaneer Invitational, will take place October 25–26 and will bring in teams from other countries. In mid November, the Bucs will also travel to Incheon, Korea, with a maximum of 30 middle and high school swimmers competing.
High school standouts include Nicolas, who swam the 100 freestyle in 53.9 seconds and the 200 freestyle in 1:58.8, and Ren Wada, who swam the 50 freestyle in 24.7 seconds. At the final meet of last season, Nicolas Radzimski placed first and Ren Wada came in second in their entire age group. The team practices seven times each week, with Wednesday and Saturday morning sessions and some even attending Friday morning training. Coach Siegel and Moodie emphasized swimming is challenging because it is year round sport, saying, “Our goal this year is to sustain motivation and ignite motivation. Swimming is the only sport that goes all year, it takes consistency to keep going.”
Students interested in joining the team are encouraged to speak directly with the coaches, though swimming background is required. With a full schedule, a dedicated practice routine, international competition, and standout athletes, the SMST Bucs are ready to make waves in 2025.
