St. Mary’s and International School of the Sacred Heart’s combined Mock Trial team [SMISSH] has had great success in their first year in the DODEA Mock Trial Court Competition. The competition, filled with highly competitive teams from U.S. military base schools Kinnick, Sasebo, Yokota and Kadena, was an overall success for SMISSH, placing fourth and winning two of their three trials.

Kai, a Class of ’29 freshman at St. Mary’s, acted as one of the primary witnesses for the prosecution team for SMISSH. “It was a good experience and we performed pretty well, being that this was our first year actually competing with other mock trial teams,” Kai explained. “Kinnick really took the spotlight this time, so I hope we can beat them next year and maybe place first. That would be really cool,” the freshman states. Although not exactly a podium finish, several participants from SMISSH were still able to be put into the spotlight in the competition. Nadia (’26) and Miyu (’28) of ISSH, were scored a perfect 10 for their outstanding performances during their trials. Nadia and SJ al(St. Mary’s class of ’27) won MVP for their cases, highlighting their flourishing and capability in the courtroom.

Isla, a Class of ’28 sophomore at ISSH, acted as one of the primary witnesses for the defense team for SMISSH. By her account, she described the event as “a great opportunity to really dive into the operations of law and court in general.” She also mentions the enjoyment of being with the team and connecting with others during the competition. From her description, mock trial is an event that is a great opportunity for two reasons: 1) it of course teaches about law more in depth than classes and allows for a hands-on experience, and 2) it is a fun opportunity to meet others and connect with upper and lower grade classmates.

From this all, it can be said with confidence that the SMISSH team met success in their first year of mock trial and their first competition. Not only was their performance applaudable but they also were also able to enjoy the process. Mock trial is something that is open to all that are interested and have commitment; it is both a challenging and enjoyable club that should be tried at least once. It may just become your favorite.
