Last week OpenAI announced that they would be releasing their own web browser based on ChatGPT. The browser is called ChatGPT Atlas and aims to automate certain parts of using the internet. The ChatGPT AI can see your screen and use the data it gathers to accomplish various tasks such as finding a website or doing research. The user can utilize voice commands to tell the AI what to do.
Most new browser releases in the modern day are do not get much attention but the ChatGPT Atlas browser took the attention of millions of internet users. Many people deep into the AI world and supporters of generative AI viewed the launch positively as a new tool to make life on the internet easier. The mainstream internet was not and kind citing privacy concerns from an AI seeing your web activity and the slow speed of the AI when it was told to accomplish a task. The AI browsing in many cases is slower than doing the task manually and many agree that it feels unfinished. The ChatGPT AI is also still very limited in what kind of internet tasks it can accomplish and will refuse to accomplish more complex tasks.
This new ChatGPT browser along with the other AI browsers releasing recently are part of a new wave of AI based web browsers. These new browsers are quite different compared to traditional long standing browsers such as Google Chrome but the product doesn’t seem to be advanced enough yet to receive widespread adoption. The future of AI web browsing along with the future of AI in general is uncertain and people will have to wait and see where projects like this end up.
