The 2025 Fall Play presented Our Town, a play written by American playwright Thornton Wilder in 1938. The play received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in the same year, recognizing its significance in American literature. Our Town was structured as a three-act play. The first act focused on the daily lives of people living in the small town of Grover’s Corners, portraying ordinary life in a simple but meaningful way. The second act explored love and marriage, highlighting an important stage in human life. The final act centered around death and eternity, encouraging audiences to reflect on the meaning of life and human existence. One unique aspect of the play was the major role of the narrator, who guided much of the story and connected the audience to the themes of the play.
Unlike previous Fall Plays, which consisted of several shorter performances, the 2025 production focused on one complete story for the entire performance. This demonstrated the additional effort and preparation dedicated to the play by both the cast and crew. The production team worked extensively to balance emotional depth, humor, and philosophical themes throughout the performance.
Five directors were involved in the production: one from Seisen International School and four from St. Mary’s International School. Mr. Stovall, one of the directors from St. Mary’s, explained that the play focused more on philosophical ideas than action, encouraging audiences to think about family, humanity, and everyday life. He also stated that the crew worked carefully to balance humor with deeper themes in order to maintain the audience’s attention.
Mr. Fujiwara, the director of technology, explained that sound design played a major role in the production. One particularly interesting aspect of the performance was that many of the sound effects were created directly by the narrators themselves. This technique complemented the narrator-led structure of the play and added to the immersive atmosphere of the performance. Mr. Fujiwara also expressed confidence in the production’s sound quality due to his background in sound design.
Overall, the 2025 Fall Play offered audiences a thoughtful and memorable performance. Through its exploration of daily life, love, and mortality, Our Town encouraged viewers to reflect on the importance of ordinary human experiences and the passage of time.
